Your electrical panel is the heart of your home's electrical system. When it fails, it can fail catastrophically — house fires, shocks and full power loss. Here are the warning signs you should never ignore.
1. Burning smell or scorch marks
Any burnt-plastic odor near the panel means insulation has melted. Shut off the main breaker and call an electrician immediately.
2. Breakers that won't reset or trip constantly
A breaker tripping once is doing its job. A breaker tripping every day means an overloaded circuit, a short, or a failing breaker.
3. Hot panel cover or hot breakers
A panel surface should never feel warm. Heat means loose connections — the #1 cause of panel fires.
4. You have an FPE Stab-Lok or Zinsco panel
These brands have a documented history of failing to trip during overloads. Insurance companies often require their replacement.
5. Buzzing, crackling or sparks
Healthy panels are silent. Any noise = arcing, which leads to fires.
6. Rust or moisture inside the panel
Water and electricity don't mix. Rust on bus bars or breakers is a full replacement situation.
